Kramer é referência, quando se fala de coadjuvantes de sitcoms. Numa interpretação explosiva, Richards é o responsável por grande parte das risadas provocadas por aquela que ainda é a melhor comédia de todos os tempos.

Tanto sucesso assim também tem seu lado ruim. Richards não conseguiu de desligar da imagem do personagem, e acabou sendo o principal prejudicado pela Seinfeld Curse. Uma rápida visita ao IMDB revela que, desde o fim da série, o ator – vencedor de três Emmy – não fez praticamente mais nada digno de nota. Uma pena.

"We're Luthors, my son. We're Luthors."

Lionel é um dos vilões mais classudos da televisão. Quando Smallville começou, cinco anos atrás, todos esperavam que Lex fosse, como sempre foi, o bad guy. Porém, fomos apresentados a um personagem longe de ser considerado aquele antagonista clássico que todos conhecem. Em seu lugar, fomos apresentados a seu pai. Esse sim a maldade em pessoa. Depois de poucos episódios, já podíamos perceber como Lionel faria para tornar Lex um cara mau de verdade.

Apesar de estar bonzinho na temporada mais recente da série (até quando?), Glover continua fazendo um trabalho excepcional. Quem assistiu Hidden, episódio em que ele personifica o Jor-El de Marlon Brando, sabe do que estou falando.

É um pássaro? É um avião?

Superman Returns (Bryan Singer, 2006)

Superman é um dos super-heróis mais complicados de se trabalhar no cinema. Se com outros personagens, é possível apresentar uma história sobre o adolescência (Homem-Aranha), uma fábula sobre o preconceito (X-Men) ou até mesmo uma versão moderna de Dirty Harry (Batman Begins); com o Homem de Aço isso não é tão simples. Grande parte dessa dificuldade vem da (in) vulnerabilidade do personagem. Se em estado normal ele é invencível, quando se acrescente kryptonita, o Super se torna o mais frágil dos seres. Como resolver esse dilema? Transformar os filmes do Azulão em um romance. Um romance disfarçado de blockbuster.

A idéia do diretor Bryan Singer nem é tão original assim – Richard Donner já fez a mesma coisa em Superman – O Filme de 1978. É possível definir O Retorno como uma declaração de amor de Singer ao trabalho de Donner. Há diversas referências distribuídas pelo longa. Uma foto de Glenn Ford - o Jonathan do longa original – no Rancho Kent, alguns diálogos que nos remetem ao filme clássico (“Estatisticamente falando, voar ainda é o jeito mais seguro de se viajar”) – além das “dicas” de que o Superman seria uma versão moderna de Jesus Cristo – se hoje em dia, ele cai na Terra com os braços abertos em formato de cruz, em 78 ele mostrou ser onipotente e girou a terra ao contrário para salvar sua amada. E qualquer adaptação que coloque Marlon Brando como o pai do salvador, já tem o meu respeito garantido.

Singer sabe como filmar bonito. A seqüência em que ele tenta impedir a queda de um avião é deslumbrante. Mas ele não se dá bem apenas com cenas de ação. Um exemplo disso é a cena em que ele voa pelos céus de Metrópolis com Lois é belíssima, nem precisa de diálogos para se fazer entender. Imagens dizem tudo. O diretor adicionou ainda alguns toques de humor negro, como nas piadas envolvendo os cachorros – uma no começo e uma no fim do filme, além de uma manchete de jornal estarrecedora que, para a alegria dos fãs, revela-se uma grande fraude.

A trilha sonora de John Ottman basicamente reutiliza os temas clássicos de John Williams e se sai muito bem. Quem não ficou arrepiado ao escutar o tema de abertura clássico da série?

O elenco é muito competente. Brandon Routh conseguiu desenvolver seus dois personagens de maneira convincente. O seu Clark Kent é menos “bobalhão” do que o de Reeve. Sinal dos tempos. Em pleno século XXI, quem torceria por um protagonista tão loser? Kate Bosworth cumpriu com destreza a tarefa de interpretar uma personagem mais velha que ela. E ainda por cima, sua Lois Lane é muito mais bonita do que a de Margot Kidder – embora ela não tenha a potência de uma Erica Durance. Outro ator que se destaca é James Marsden. Vivendo um personagem muito parecido com o feito por ele em Diário de Uma Paixão, Marsden mostra que ser o antagonista do mocinho em um triângulo amoroso não implica em ser necessariamente uma pessoa de má índole.

Já Kevin Spacey parece ter encontrado o tom certo para seu Lex Luthor. Fugindo da caricatura do trabalho de Gene Hackman na cinessérie original, Spacey adiciona uma aura mais ameaçadora ao personagem. Não é à toa que sua discussão com Lois Lane foi incluída no trailer. O problema de Luthor como personagem tem como culpado o roteiro. Eu não gosto da origem dessa origem que o personagem tem no cinema, de gênio do mal. Ela é muito pobre, fica parecendo algo “Sou mal porque sou mal”. Agrada-me muito mais a abordagem usada em Smallville, por exemplo, onde Clark e Lex se conhecem desde à adolescência, ela confere mais complexidade e credibilidade ao vilão – o tornando uma espécie de Darth Vader pós-moderno.

O filme possui uma reviravolta em sua segunda metade – a cena onde tal informação é confirmada se revela uma das melhores da fita*, que cria uma elipse em relação ao início do filme – e conseqüentemente ao original de 78. Muito tem se discutido sobre ela. Eu gostei. E quero ver como esse acontecimento será trabalhado nas seqüências vindouras.

Eu, fã de Smallville que sou, até tentei catar algumas referência à série. Mas não achei quase nada. Em uma das cenas mais divertidas do filme, Clark e Jimmy estão em um bar, tomando café, quando o noticiário anuncia que a cidade está em perigo. Olsen se vira para comentar o fato com o colega, mas encontra o assento ao seu lado vazio – na reprodução de uma das gags mais clássicas da série. O desfecho de Lex no filme também nos remete ao destino de seu correspondente televisivo, no final de uma das temporadas (não vou revelar qual delas pra não estragar a surpresa).

Por falar em séries, a seqüência envolvendo a queda de um avião me remeteu diretamente ao piloto de outra série de grande sucesso – precisa dizer qual? E por mais competente que Frank Langella seja ao interpretar Perry White, eu fiquei muito curioso em saber como Hugh Laurie (House) – a primeira escolha para o papel – trataria o personagem. E antes do filme começar, foi exibido o trailer de Sentinela – que promete ser um thriller bem interessante – que conta com as presenças de Kiefer Sutherland (24 Horas) e Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives) no elenco.

A bilheteria aquém do esperado pode ser explicada no fato de que o filme não investe apenas na ação desenfreada. Antes de qualquer coisa, O Retorno conta a história de duas pessoas apaixonadas, que não sabem como lidar exatamente com os sentimentos que sentem um pelo outro. E é aí que reside sua grandeza. E que venha logo o próximo filme da série!

Analisando Grey's Anatomy em retrospecto, é gritante o crescimento da personagem de Chandra Wilson na série. Se na primeira temporada, Sandra Oh e sua Cristina Yang eram o centro de todas as atenções, agora é a Dra. Bailey que se destaca.

Ela mostra que rigidez e doçura são dois adjetivos que podem se aplicar à mesma pessoa. Quem não sentiu saudade quando ela entrou em licença-maternidade? Quem não sofreu e torceu junto com ela enquanto seu filho estava nascendo?

Brilhantemente interpretada por Wilson - quem ousa discordar de sua indicação ao Emmy? - Bailey já mora em nossos corações. E por isso ela está nesse Top.

10ª Posição:

"Put yourself together!"

Personagem: Comandante Willian Adama
Interpretado por: Edward James Olmos
Série: Battlestar Galactica
Emissora: Sci-Fi Channel (EUA); TNT (Brasil)

Não deve ser fácil comandar uma nave como a Battlestar Galactica. Além de cuidar da nave em si, que tem centenas de tripulantes, ele é o líder militar da espécie humana (os cylons destruíram as doze colônias, lembra?). Todas as semanas ele tem um problema diferente, uma hora é a presidente se insurgindo, em outra é o seu próprio filho. Sem falar nas trapalhadas de um cientista amalucado que fala sozinho ou os atentados terroristas...

Apesar de ser tão atarefado, Adama consegue desempenhar suas funções com maestria. E mesmo quando é hora de tomar decisões delicadas, como garantir a legitimidade de uma eleição que pode colocar um lunático como líder da espécie, ele não hesita.

O Mundo Mágico de Shyamalan

The Village (M. Night Shyamalan, 2004)

ATENÇÃO: O TEXTO À SEGUIR CONTÉM SPOILERS SOBRE O FILME

A Vila é um dos filmes mais subestimados dos últimos tempos. Todos os elementos que fizeram sucesso nas produções anteriores do diretor estão lá: direção impecável (ou quase, depois comento sobre isso), elenco maravilhoso, parte técnica – indo desde a fotografia, até a trilha sonora – soberba. E até mesmo a marca do diretor, o final surpresa, está presente.

A diferença é que em O Sexto Sentido ou em Corpo Fechado, o twist nos minutos finais serve para dar um ponto final à história – dando origem a comentários do tipo “Porque não notei isso antes?”. Em A Vila, tal revelação – que na verdade são duas – serve para abrir um leque maior de possibilidades.

Um dos maiores destaques da película é a protagonista do filme é interpretada pela linda Bryce Dallas Howard (dizem alguns, inclusive, que ela foi a maior contribuição que seu pai – o ator/diretor Ron Howard – já deu ao cinema). Ela transforma Ivy Walker em uma figura encantadora e forte. Ao contrário do que sua cegueira nos poderia fazer pensar no princípio.

Uma das minhas únicas ressalvas ao filme é quando, perto do final do filme, Ivy é atacada por uma das criaturas da floresta. Apenas alguns minutos antes, a informação de que tais criaturas eram apenas invenção dos anciões do povoado nos havia sido fornecida. Parece que Shyamalan quis apenas nos dar mais um susto. As conseqüências dessa cena para a história são totalmente compreensíveis. A minha implicância é com a cena em si. Talvez o flashback da cena onde Ivy descobre a verdade sobre tudo, deveria ser colocado mais adiante.

Apesar desse pequeno deslize, A Vila ainda é um dos filmes mais interessantes dos últimos anos, e assim como as outras produções dirigidas por M. Night Shyamalan, só melhora numa revisitada. Com uma vantagem, se nos outros filmes dele – o final surpresa deixa a história “fechadinha”, aqui ele nos convida à refletir – algo não muito comum no cinema atual.

Cotação: 4,5/5

God Damn Cocksuckers!

Primeira temporada de Deadwood assistida. Al Swearengen é um dos personagens mais geniais de todos os tempos. Ponto.
